SNORAS Spyker Squadron Nürburgring Qualifying Report

- (22.08.2009)

SNORAS Spyker Squadron will start the fourth round of the Le Mans Series this weekend at the Nürburgring from the back of the grid. Having set the sixth fastest time in GT2 qualifying this afternoon the team will have to serve its 10-place grid penalty for changing an engine after the Portimão race.

In the two free practice sessions that took place on Saturday as well as the final free practice session on Sunday morning the C8 Laviolette GT2 was fourth fastest in class. On both a damp and a dry track the team was able to continue at the pace already shown in Portugal. Both Tom Coronel and Jarek Janis were rather happy with the basic set-up of the car and were able to spend their time improving the car even further.

As soon as the light went green Sunday afternoon at 13:40 Tom went out to qualify the car for tomorrow's race. Higher temperatures meant the track was a bit slower than it was during the final practice session. Tom was able to improve his fastest time lap after lap, but his best time of 1:59.114 was just under six tenths of a second slower than this morning. As the session came to an end the C8 Laviolette GT2 was in sixth place.

Tom Coronel: "The track conditions really changed compared to the morning session. Even though we did not change a thing I had some understeer in some of the corners. As a result I was unable to get on the throttle as soon as I wanted. The car itself is great though, in fact I think I can say the car has never been better before. I am very satisfied and I am confident about tomorrow's race."

Jarek Janis: "Third free practise session was ok. We worked on set-up and the car is well-ballanced now and less understeering. Unfortunately, in afternoon qualifying, when the conditions were much warmer, the car tended to be understeering again. Time achieved in qualifying is not perfect, however, we are not dissapointed. As well as in Algarve we will start from the last position on the grid. It´s a pity, however, we´ll try to secure the best possible result. I suppose we wouldn´t be taken in any collision and we would accomplished trouble-free race. It will be long race and everything could happen."

Peter van Erp, Managing Director Spyker Squadron: "We're right there were we wanted to be. We've had three great practice sessions in which we were fourth. In qualifying things went quite swell and we managed to set the sixth fastest time. I am really satisfied with the result and the car is looking good. Unfortunately we'll be starting from the back of the grid, but at least we've shown that the pace we had at Portimão is still there."

The 1000 km of the Nürburgring is the fourth round of the 2009 championship and will start on Sunday August 23rd 12:30 p.m. CET. The race will be 195 laps or six hours long. Eurosport 2 will be broadcasting the first 2 hours and 45 minutes of the race on Sunday with the end of the race shown (delayed) at 19:30.
