SNORAS Spyker Squadron Le Mans 24 Hours Preview

- (10.06.2009)

Last Friday the SNORAS Spyker Squadron exchanged their base in Holland for the ‘Circuit de la Sarthe’ just South of Le Mans, France, for their participation in the most gruelling races of all; the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Dutch team has been invited by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) to enter one Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R in the 24 hour race. The car will be driven by Spyker Squadron Le Mans Series-regulars Tom Coronel and Jarek Janis. The pair will be accompanied by 2009 LMP2 winner Jeroen Bleekemolen.

Most of the weekend was used to unload the trucks, set up the pit box and install all equipment. Yesterday the team’s GT2 car was transported to the Le Mans city centre for the traditional ‘le pasage’ - the technical checks. Under the eyes of thousands of people the car passed the technical and administrative checks to be invited to the six-hour free practice session on Wednesday.

Whilst scruteneering continued for other teams on Tuesday - Spyker Squadron used their time to finalise the preparation of spare parts that might be required in the next days; Le Mans got its fair share of bad weather the last days and there is an 80 percent change for rain today. Fortunately better weather is expected towards the race.

The team will start the six-hour free practice session to complete all sorts of system checks. Parts of the 13.6 kilometre long track are public roads with little grip and it takes time before the track improves to such level that one can start working on the setup of the car. Towards the end of the session, after ten o’clock, all three drivers need to complete three mandatory laps in dark conditions.

„It is a shame, it is raining so much today. I should do first hour of free practice session with the aim to run the engine, brakes and other car´s components sufficiently. However, if it would be raining, we would run less laps, because the qualifying and even the race should be held at dry conditions. So there is no point to test the set-up for wet conditions and risk the damage of the car,“ explains Jarek Janiš.

Peter van Erp, Managing Director Spyker Squadron: “We are back at Le Mans and our class is as strong as ever. Ten Ferrari F430’s, five Porsche 911’s the Aston Martin and a Spyker C8 are a guarantee for spectacle and competition in our class. We will therefor focus on the race and everything we do in free practice and qualifying is aimed towards having the best possible setup for the race. I am happy that we have a very experienced drive line-up this year. Jarek Janis is back with the team to join Dutchman Tom Coronel, he proofed to be fit during our successful pre-Le Mans test in Monza. I am also extremely proud that Jeroen Bleekemolen, last years LMP2 winner and Porsche GT specialist, joined the team.”

Eurosport will broadcast most of the free practice sessions, qualifying and the race live one of their channels. For more Spyker Squadron updates do not forget to drop by our VIMEO and TWITTER pages which we will be updating regularly.
